3 Birds Marketing

Business grows in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL -3 Birds was founded in mid-2009 in the San Francisco Bay Area to develop an automated digital marketing platform.  Our initial focus was to make the platform and managed marketing services available to the automotive industry.  In early 2010, it 3 Birds Entrancewas decided to relocate 3 Birds from the San Francisco Bay Area to another location where development, marketing, creative and writing talent was strong and where the quality of life would be good for all future employees of 3 Birds.  After considering several locations, Chapel Hill was chosen.  3 Birds moved to Chapel Hill in the spring of 2010, along with the four founders and one employee.  We took small temporary space at the Europa Center and began searching for and hiring developers and marketers.  We looked for and located about 3,000 square feet of permanent space on Rosemary Street and worked with the owner to design and build our offices. We moved into the new space in October, 2010.  At that time, we had about 15 employees and the founders.

We introduced the first component of our platform to the automotive market in late 2010.  The reaction was enthusiastic and sales were strong.  By mid 2012 we were bursting at the seams in our West Rosemary space.  We were fortunate to locate 8,000 square feet of office space in the old Chapel Hill News building on West Franklin Street, now owned by Scott Maitland.  We worked with the City and the Downtown Partnership to convert our West Rosemary Street offices into Launch, which we support both financially and in kind.  We moved into our new space in late 2012. When the Chapel Hill News vacated the last of their space in the building in the middle of 2015, we took that space over and now have all 14,000 square feet of its office space.  We have grown considerably since our early days in temporary space at the Europa Center, both in revenue and employees.  We are approaching eight figures in revenue and currently employ eighty-seven full and part time employees and seven interns.   Eighty of our full time and part time employees and interns work in our 505-B Chapel Hill offices.  The balance of our employees are located around the United States.

We made the Inc. 5000 list this year, the first year that we were eligible. Our revenue from 2010 through 2014 has grown over 6,000 percent.  Serving automotive manufacturers, dealership associations, large and small dealer groups and individual dealers, we now touch approximately 4,500 of the 17,000 dealerships in the United States.  And we continue to grow.  Our employees are a significant part of the growth of West Franklin Street through their patronage of restaurants, pubs, and shops.  Our space in the old Chapel Hill News building gives us the room to grow in Chapel Hill.
